THE FOLLOWING LINES WERE OCC-HASION'D BY SAWING DOWN
LIBERTY-TREE IN GREAT BARRINGTON, ON THE NIGHT NEXT AFTER
THE 28TH DAY OF JUN LAST.
And as they sink in virtue, rise in fame,
A tale, that blends their glory with their shame.
[signed] Pope.
Beneath fair freedom's banner, waving high,
Her gen'rous sons, all slavish views deny;
All slavish fears--all party rage disown--
True to their country--to its bleeding laws
And firm, is just expiring freedom's cause.
. . . [60 lines] [signed] Philo Sappho.
Great-Barrington, 9th July 1774.
